Walkie Talkie Frequency Range – What You Should Know
Two way radios can have ranges which range from a few hundred metres to several miles, depending on the power output of the radio, its transmission type and the frequency that is being used.
But what is the walkie talkie frequency range and how do you know which frequency to choose? The best frequency to choose for your two way radios will depend on where you are using them, the range that is required and the type of radios that you are using. It will also depend on whether or not you have a licence for your radio.
Licence-Free Radio Channels
If you do not hold a licence for your radios, there are eight licence-free channels in the UK that you can choose from. These are:
- 446.00625
- 446.01875
- 446.03125
- 446.04375
- 446.05625
- 446.06875
- 446.08125
- 446.09375
Licenced Radio Channels
If you want to use other radio channels in the UK, or if you require a private channel of communication, you’ll need to apply for a licence from OFCOM. This costs around £75 per organisation for five years. This will allow you to communicate on different channels. You can also apply for a customised licence which will give you exclusive use of a specific channel in a given location.

VHF Vs UHF
When it comes to high frequency two-way radios, you have two main options. These are Very High-Frequency radios (VHF) and Ultra High-Frequency radios (UHF).
VHF radios have a frequency of 30MHz – 300MHz. These signals can travel up to 100 miles, making them suitable for long-distance use. However, their lower frequency means that obstacles such as buildings or dense woodland may impact the signal of the radio. This makes VHF radios most suitable for outdoor use in rural areas, for example in farming, construction and road work.
UHF radios have a frequency of between 300MHz and 3,000MHz, making them suitable for longer distances, as well as for indoor use. For this reason, UHF radios are often the two-way radio of choice for locations such as factories, warehouses, hospitals and schools.
What Walkie Talkie Has The Longest Range?
If you’re looking for a two-way radio system that is able to work over a large range, it’s worth considering a radio that offers cellular data network coverage. These radios operate on a cellular data card, enabling them to utilise the mobile phone data network to provide nationwide coverage.
Long-range walkie talkies are ideal for use in the transport sector, where HGV drivers need to remain connected during long journeys. These radios also have GPS tracking built-in, helping to promote the safety and wellbeing of your workers.
One of our most popular long-range two-way radios which utilises cellular data cards is the Digi X Horizon Mobile. This Android-based mobile terminal provides crystal clear audio to facilitate seamless communication. Its cellular data network coverage allows workers to communicate nationwide, no matter where in the country they are, enabling you to stay connected 24/7.
